Places You Must Visit on Durmitor
Durmitor is one of the most beautiful mountain regions in Montenegro, known for its glacial lakes, high peaks, canyons, viewpoints and rich history. Whether you are visiting for an easy walk, hiking, photography or adventure, these are the places you should not miss during your stay in Žabljak.
1. Black Lake
Black Lake is the most famous lake on Durmitor, located at 1,422 meters above sea level. It is about 2 km from Camp Apartments Razvršje, around 20–25 minutes on foot. Surrounded by dense coniferous forest and mountains, it is perfect in summer for a relaxing walk around both parts of the lake – the Great Lake and the Small Lake.
2. Bobotov Kuk
Bobotov Kuk, 2,523 m high, is the highest peak of Durmitor and a true challenge for experienced hikers. The ascent takes several hours, but the reward is a spectacular panoramic view of the Durmitor massif, Black Lake and the surrounding mountain ranges.
3. Ice Cave
The Ice Cave is located high above Black Lake and can only be reached on foot. It is known for fascinating ice stalactites and stalagmites that remain even during summer. Because of the more demanding access, going with a guide is recommended.
4. Durmitor Ring
The Durmitor Ring is a panoramic route of about 90 km, leading through some of the most beautiful parts of Durmitor. The road passes mountain villages, high passes, Tara Canyon and landscapes with unforgettable views. The tour can be done by car, jeep or bicycle.
5. Prutaš
Prutaš, 2,393 m high, is one of the most photogenic peaks of Durmitor. It is known for its distinctive rock formations, which give the mountain a unique visual identity. The climb is attractive and rewarding, making it a great choice for photography lovers and hikers.
6. Sedlo
Sedlo is located at 1,907 m above sea level and is one of the most famous mountain passes on Durmitor. It is known for spectacular views and is often used as a starting point for the ascent to Prutaš, as well as for shorter mountain walks.
7. Tara Canyon and Ćurevac Viewpoint
Tara Canyon is one of the most impressive natural landmarks in the region, reaching up to 1,300 meters in depth. Ćurevac is one of the best viewpoints over the canyon and can be reached by car followed by a short walk.
8. Đurđevića Tara Bridge
Đurđevića Tara Bridge was built between 1937 and 1940 and is 365 meters long. Today, it is one of the best-known tourist attractions in this part of Montenegro, offering beautiful views of the Tara River and the possibility of a zip-line adventure.
9. Big and Small Škrčko Lakes
The Škrčko Lakes are located in the heart of Durmitor and offer a true mountain atmosphere. Big Škrčko Lake is known for its turquoise water and rocky surroundings, while Small Škrčko Lake is quieter and wilder, ideal for those looking for silence and an authentic mountain setting.
10. Zminje Lake
Zminje Lake is a small and peaceful lake surrounded by dense pine forest. It is ideal for a short walk, rest and picnic in nature, away from the main crowds.
11. Savin Kuk
Savin Kuk is a popular ski resort in winter, while in summer it is known for its cable car and beautiful viewpoints. From this area, visitors can enjoy views of Black Lake, Žabljak and the surrounding peaks of Durmitor.
12. Šljeme, Međed and Planinica
Šljeme is a good choice for easier hiking routes and open viewpoints. Međed is a more demanding peak that rises above Black Lake, while Planinica offers an accessible trail with beautiful views of Žabljak and Black Lake.
13. Riblje, Vražje, Modro, Barno and Jablan Lakes
Durmitor is famous for its many glacial lakes. Riblje Lake is peaceful and surrounded by meadows, Vražje Lake is known for its unusual shape and mystical atmosphere, Modro Lake is smaller and often overlooked, Barno Lake is easily accessible near Black Lake, while Jablan Lake is hidden in the forest and perfect for a quiet walk.
14. Tito’s Cave
Tito’s Cave is located above Black Lake and has historical importance, as it served as one of the partisan hideouts during the Second World War. A narrow mountain trail leads to it, and the entrance offers a beautiful view of the surrounding area.
15. Stećci – Medieval Monuments
Stećci are medieval stone monuments found across the Durmitor area. Often decorated with symbols of the sun, swords and crosses, they represent an important part of the cultural and historical heritage of this mountain region.
